Nudist denied dying wish to be buried without clothes - Illinois, USA 2005

He came into this world naked, spent much of his time in it nude, but will - against his specific wishes - depart it fully clothed.

Robert Norton, of Pekin, Illinois, was often prosecuted during his lifetime for gardening and wandering outside his house in the nude.

The 82-year-old said he wanted to be buried in his birthday suit - but his family are having none of it.

His brothers have decided to lay him to rest in grey trousers and a shirt.

One of them, Jack, is a minister. "He's not going to be buried in the nude," he said.

The other, Duane, explained that his late brother's behaviour was not meant to offend people.

"He was a naturist, and he just chose to be in the nude as people who are seeking nature. He was a peace-loving person," he said.

Nonetheless, certain people were offended including, crucially, Norton's neighbours.

Brenda Loete said she never spoke to Norton despite living next door to him for more than a decade.

"We didn't really know him. We just had him arrested," she said.

She had spent years taking her daughter to the park rather than letting her play in the garden because of the naked old man next door, she said.

"Normally, if we had him arrested in the spring he'd be gone for the summer and we wouldn't have to worry about him until the next spring."

The cycle of arrest and prosecution lasted over four decades, until the World War II veteran was admitted to a nursing home.

He fought 20 arrests for indecency since his first in 1962, arguing that he had a constitutional right to public nakedness, the Associated Press reported.

His family said they hoped his burial would lay years of controversy to rest.

That is such a sad tale. "We didn't know him. We just had him arrested." That says it all about people nowadays.

how right you are trevor... it shows how closed minded people can really be and also so damned afraid of accepting someone because of their nature..  where a child is concerned can be a tricky matter though... i think i would discuss nudism with him or her.. let them no that it is nothing to be ashamed of

I have kids and it would only serve them well to let them be exposed to the nudist as long as he or she was not doing anything sexual or inappropriate.

If we want our world to be a better place we need to teach our kids that everyone is different. Novody is the same and that is why the world is so wonderful. We should teach kids that if someone is not hurting us we should treat them well and allow them to be who they are.

This isn't about nudism really. This is about tolerance of people who do not fit into the mainstream. If these parents had treated this old man with dignity and taught their daughter that some people do things differently, something special could have come out of this sad situation.

I am, of course, working on the assumption that this man was not being suggestive with his nudity.

yes bob.. in giving out views of our own.. i think we tend to look at it from a favourable point of view.. if he has been doing this for 40 years..so to speak .. and still be free in society..one can assume he wasnt suggestive in with his nudism

By the sounds of things he was a real pest. I bet he was right old bugger so I don't know if he is deserving of the sympathy you are all showing.

It doesnt matter if this old man was a nuisance or not. If he wanted to be buried naked then he should have been and his family should be ashamed. Its the same as choosing buriel or cremation or what song you want played. The family should always respect these wishes.

Not sure why people are arguing. This guy should have had his last requests granted.

So this s a bit too serious but does he care realy? his dead

Hello Dim Boy,

i think the point here is to inform people, nudists and non nudists alike, that this persons last wishes were not granted. It is a way for those who wish to be nude, live nude and be totally nude, to be informed how their freedom is being infringed upon, regardless if they are no longer living. Perhaps this post will help make sure that if anyone else wishes this.. they can take steps to not have it happen to them.

cheers,

ron
