The Naked Australians photographers had braced themselves for loud-mouthed hecklers, meddlesome narks and even police intervention. But in the end, our very public naked photo shoot barely raised an eyebrow.
Lynda was one of the five brave volunteers who stripped off at Newcastle’s famous Nobby’s Beach on March 14.
After recently battling cancer, she said her decision to bare all was an easy one to make. “It’s all about living without fear from now on,” she told us. “I don’t want to regret all the things I should have done but was too scared to try.
“If I’d seen this advertisement in the paper [calling for nude people] before I was sick, I probably would have just chuckled and went on with my day.
“But when I saw the ad, I just told myself I was going to have a go at it.”
Lynda and her newly-found nude friends worked beautifully as a team on the morning of the shoot. Although they were complete strangers to each other, they didn't appear in the least bit confronted when it came time to disrobe. Posing against the backdrop of the Nobby’s Beach Lighthouse, the naked clan struck their poses at double speed, fearing they may be moved on by police.
“But after all the worry, nobody seemed to care what we were doing,” laughed Peter, a die-hard nudist from Newcastle. “After about a minute I just felt totally comfortable. In fact, I felt wonderful. We weren’t trying to bother anyone and nobody tried to bother us.”
Raylene, a Grandmother of eight, was blunt when asked why she had decided to strut her naked stuff in such a daring way. “I never wear clothes and I love it that way,” she said. “We’ve got nothing to be ashamed of and it’s all in good fun.”
The Naked Australians team had no idea what to expect when they arrived at the location – they had prepared themselves for hundreds of participants but were equally ready to pack up and leave empty handed if nobody turned up at all.
“I thought more people would have come,” said Len, who has been a fan of
Naked Australians for more than a year. “But the group that we got was very good and it turned out to be a lot of fun.”
Proud Novacastrian, Barry, said the photo shoot took him back to his teenage years when he and his friends would strip nude on hot Summer days. “I’ve been a naturalist since I was 14-years-old,” he said. “This photo just felt like a completely natural thing to do. It was a great experience.”
“The photographers were so professional,” added Lynda. “To be honest I was relieved there was nothing shady or sleazy about the whole thing.
“I just had a ball and it’s another one of those adventurous things in life that I can tick off my list and know that I’ve done it.”
