If you ever needed proof that Stuart Baanstra was a man of his convictions, you’d need look no further than that day in March, 2011 when he was arrested in Sydney for offensive conduct. Stuart, a self-confessed ‘political nudist’, left his home dressed in nothing more than a G-string before hopping a public bus bound for the city’s centre. But he didn’t get much further than the steps of Town Hall before he was confronted by a constable who ordered Stuart to cover up. When the nudist flatly refused to comply with the directive, he was arrested, charged and later brought before a judge who made short work of Stuart’s colourful claims that he had just cause to be scantily clad in a public place. He walked away with a $200 fine and a criminal conviction. Stuart is certainly not your typical nudist. He doesn’t just rally for the certification of nude beaches and recreational areas. Indeed, he recently stood as a candidate for the New South Wales Upper House touting the idea that all people, children included, should have the right to be nude at anytime and anywhere. This, he said, included shopping centres, schools, parks, restaurants and entertainment venues. Stuart’s bid for a seat in the Upper House failed but not before his semi-nude campaign antics made headlines around the world. Central to Stuart’s nudist cause is the idea that people have an inherent entitlement to complete freedom. This, he says, includes the freedom to live at all times without clothes. When asked by a journalist about the freedom of others, including children, to live their lives without being confronted by naked people at places such as the local service station, Stuart replied “well to be quite honest under my plan I don’t think they’d have much choice”. “We really need to have a cultural change,” he continued. “It’s a bit like homosexuality. I mean 50 years ago it was considered a mental illness and so on and so on and today it has much greater acceptance . . . I’d like to see nudity go the same way that it’s not something that is the butt of jokes but something which is viewed as a healthy and normal way of living”. And what better way to prove his point than with a full-frontal nude photographic shoot for the well-respected website Naked Australians? It’s clear from his photographs that Stuart is most as ease when completely free from the restrictions of clothing. As for the future, Stuart makes no bones that he intends to continue fighting for his self-defined nudist cause even if it is at the risk of doing jail time. He says he’s considering refusing to pay his $200 fine as an ultimate act of protest in support of nudist rights. “Nudists do pay rates and taxes,” he said. “And yet we are a group which isn’t recognised.”

Where do I start? Mate, there's nothing wrong with nudity and I hope nudists are always given their section of sand or land where they can be legally nude without fear pf prosecution, But mate you can't seriously be calling for nudity to be allowed everywhere! What about people who don't wanna see your wang? This isn't about shame. That is a seperate issue and I agree we should not be ashamed of our naked selves. But can't you see what a hypocrite you are? Now you feel your rights are not being respected yet you want society to move towards a way of life where the rights of others, who don't want to be exposed to public nudity, are stripped away! And isn't a bit suspect that you are talking about nudism and yet your pics are clearly sexual?

Rod, let's call a penis a penis, and not a wang. It always strikes me how people are unable to call the genitals by their right names. Now there's the shame. And what if my photoshoot is "clearly sexual"? How about all the sexualising of clothes, like tight crotches, low cleavage and high skirts? Now there's the hypocrisy! There's nothing wrong with erections, or masturbating, as this website clearly shows. My only regret is I didn't masturbate in my shoot. I didn't know we could. But I guess my semen is the next thing you'll be seeing. Keep tuned. Stuart.

A penis is just a piece of skin and flesh. It's not like it's a nuclear weapon which is capable of destroying millions of people. I believe that the state should NOT have any right to go telling people what they can and can't do with their bodies - after all look at how things like body modifications, piercings, tattoos and wearing t-shirts with offensive slogans on them are considered socially acceptable. People who don't like nudity have something seriously wrong with them, and that's their problem they need to deal with themselves. Go Stuart - we need more nudists with the courage and convictions that you've got! :) Stop apartheid and segregation of nudists NOW!!

Better think about it Stuart. If they cannot claim the 'debt' from you, you will have black marks against your credit rating and they are extremely hard to get rid of. Keep us posted.

Dear Admin, I can't pay the fine. I've done nothing wrong. It was a kangaroo court. The police who testified against me and had me convicted were either mistaken, or lied. Nor can I appeal. I couldn't afford a lawyer in the first case. I can't even afford to get my teeth fixed. Stuart.

Dear Naked Australians, I received an order to pay a fine and court costs relating to my case for Offensive Conduct last year. The State Debt Recovery Office is giving me until March 16 to pay, or the Sherrif's office will cancel my driver's licence and/or seize property/access my bank account to recover funds, all without further notice. I'm not intending to pay.

Dear Naked Australians, please be informed that I've received three (3) Penalty Notices from the Australian Taxation Office for failing to lodge annual tax returns. I've advised the ATO that I'm gay and, as such, refuse to comply with taxation laws, including the Penalty Notices, until the government ends all laws discriminating against GLBTI people. Thank you. Dear Naked Australians, the Australian Taxation Office has given me until May 14 to pay my fines, else they begin legal action. Wouldn't it be wonderful if nudists had the gumption of the gay community?
